Seven Characteristics of a (Christian) Sheep!
Come on! Let's quickly go through and learn them!
Believers are often compared to sheep in God’s Word, and God is portrayed as the Shepherd. But have you ever stopped to wonder—why sheep? Why not a lion, eagle, or some stronger animal?
Understanding the nature of sheep gives us deep insight into how we are to walk with God—and why we need Him every day.
1. Sheep Are Gentle and Innocent
Sheep are among the most peaceful animals in nature. They are gentle, quiet, and not aggressive. This reflects the purity and meekness God desires from His children.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” – Matthew 5:5
2. Sheep Are Followers by Nature
Sheep don’t lead—they follow. Without a shepherd, they are prone to wander and get lost. This is why we need Jesus, our Good Shepherd, to lead us in all our ways.
“All we like sheep have gone astray.” – Isaiah 53:6
3. Sheep Are Defenseless and Vulnerable
Sheep have no natural defenses—they rely entirely on the shepherd for protection. In the same way, we are spiritually defenseless without God.
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want... Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” – Psalm 23:1, 4
4. Sheep Recognize the Shepherd’s Voice
Sheep know the voice of their shepherd and will not follow a stranger. Jesus said the same about His people.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” – John 10:27
Are you willing to listen to the voice of our Good Shepherd? You can hear His voice daily through prayer and the Word.
5. Sheep Need Constant Guidance
Sheep are not naturally alert or wise. They often repeat mistakes and walk into danger. That’s why they need the constant presence of the shepherd—just as we need daily guidance from God.
“He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” – Psalm 23:2-3
6. Sheep Thrive in a Flock
Sheep are social animals—they don't like being alone. Spiritually, this teaches us the importance of fellowship with other believers.
“Let us not give up meeting together.” – Hebrews 10:25
We grow stronger when we stay connected to the Body of Christ.
7. Christ’s Nature as the Lamb of God
One of the most profound titles given to Jesus in Scripture is “The Lamb of God.” This title speaks of His innocence, sacrifice, and redemptive mission.
1. Innocence and Purity
Jesus lived a life without sin—gentle, spotless, and pure.
“He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.” – 1 Peter 2:22
2. The Ultimate Sacrifice
Jesus became the once-and-for-all sacrifice for humanity, fulfilling what lambs symbolized in the Old Testament.
“Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” – John 1:29
3. Meekness and Obedience
He submitted fully to the Father’s will, like a lamb led to the slaughter.
“He was led like a lamb to the slaughter... and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.” – Isaiah 53:7
4. Fulfillment of Prophecy
Christ is our Passover Lamb, saving us from spiritual death.
“For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.” – 1 Corinthians 5:7
5. The Lamb on the Throne
Even in heaven, Jesus is worshipped as the Lamb.
“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength.” – Revelation 5:12
Conclusion: Let Us Follow the Lamb
To know Jesus as the Lamb of God is to understand the depth of His love, humility, and sacrifice.
Will you follow the Lamb wherever He leads? Let His sacrifice draw your heart closer to Him every day.
What This Means for Us Today
God didn’t compare us to sheep to insult us—but to remind us how much we depend on Him.
As sheep of His pasture, we are called to:
- Walk in humility
- Stay close to our Shepherd
- Trust Him to lead and protect us
- Live in community with other believers
- Be sensitive to His voice
Final Thoughts: Stay Close to the Shepherd
When we understand how much like sheep we truly are, we realize we can’t live life on our own terms.
“Know that the Lord is God. It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.” – Psalm 100:3
Let’s stay close to the Shepherd—and follow Him with all our hearts.
