THE CUP OF SALVATION !!!
THE BOOK OF PSALM 116:13 SAYS:
I will lift up the cup of Salvation and call on the name of
the Lord!
The most exciting phrase “The cup of Salvation” is mentioned
only once in the Bible
that is in Psalms 116:13.
that is in Psalms 116:13.
Usually the cup speaks of a drinking vessel.
According
to Hebrew root word “To hold together”.
But throughout the Bible it is used
very often in a figurative sense.
Like for example.................
Cup of consolation (Jer 16:7)
Cup of wrath (Rev 16:19)
Cup of blessing (ICor 10:16)…………etc.
The word cup & cups are mentioned altogether 65 times in
the Bible.
But among all these cups only one is higher & supreme;
That is The cup of Salvation.
It is not found in world’s treasures or in kings palaces.
But only in God who is both the Creator & the Savior of the world.
It is
high in value, It is of a great price, A very unique cup of Salvation.
What does the psalmist mean by the cup of Salvation?
A cup of water may quench the thirst!
A cup of wine can make a heart merry!
But for the psalmist The cup of salvation is a wonderful
experience he personally had from God.
Firstly The Lord delivered his soul from death. (vs.3,4,8)
Secondly The Lord is gracious & merciful unto him. (vs.5)
Thirdly The Lord gave rest unto his soul. (vs.7a)
Fourthly The Lord dealt with him bountifully. (vs.7b)
Fifthly The Lord gave him benefits & blessings. (vs.12)
The cup of Salvation is not just an experience for him but
also a cup of life.
A life for the dead, a life for the lost, a life for a
sinner & a life for all.
Psalmist was glad that he received life from the Lord.
So joy and gratitude filled in his heart he says finally,
I will lift up the cup of Salvation!
some versions "I will
take"; other versions says "I will take up".
RSV is the right translation: "I
will lift up" Lifting up higher not putting down.
Lifting it up is a sign that his joy, his glory & his life are in it.

Lifting it up that every one may
know how glorious the cup of salvation is.
After lifting up the cup of Salvation he calls upon the Lord’s name.

For the psalmist the name of Jehovah!
But for us the very
name becomes the name of Jesus!
This very name gave life to the psalmist!
And he also had wonderful experiences in this excellent name!

The reason of his calling is for
thanksgiving without any doubt (vs.17)
By lifting the cup of Salvation he is witnessing the Lord!
And by
calling upon His name he is glorifying (praising, adoring) the Lord!
May the
Lord enable us that we may be his true witnesses!
And we may continue to bring glory to His name by our lives!
